围绕“全球变化下的珊瑚礁生态学”展开研究，重点关注南海典型热带珊瑚礁生态系统。围绕珊瑚生长、繁殖相关的生物学问题和珊瑚共生功能体、珊瑚与环境的关系及生态系统结构与功能等生态学问题，结合野外生态调查与室内模拟试验来研究珊瑚繁殖、生长相关的生理生化过程和发育组织学，从而明确不同环境压力条件对珊瑚种群补充和恢复的潜在影响；分析影响珊瑚礁生态系统稳定的生物因子（共生体）、环境理化因子及功能生物响应，揭示多重环境压力条件下珊瑚礁生态系统的退化机理与响应机制；综合珊瑚礁及其功能生物响应机理，开展珊瑚礁修复技术研发，针对不同退化程度的珊瑚礁进行三维系统重构或生态修复。
