长期从事珊瑚营养生态学的研究,以脂质和脂肪酸为切入点探讨“珊瑚主要的营养物质是什么?其对环境变化的响应怎样?如何应用?”等问题。开发造礁石珊瑚体成分和脂肪酸的测定方法,发现脂质是珊瑚的主要能量物质。随后,从能量和营养方式的角度探讨珊瑚对环境变化的响应机制。研究结果发现,珊瑚幼虫可以通过脂肪酸重组调节生物膜流动性以适应低浓度的营养盐加富;温度变化可以改变珊瑚母体的能量分配策略和脂肪酸组成,在新的温度环境中实现生长和繁殖能量投入的平衡。同时,发现异养脂质摄入是珊瑚的重要能量补充,可以提高珊瑚的健康状况。
